Journalism Summer School

Journalism Summer School in Dublin: 30 June -12 July 2025 

Study journalism with CNN Academy in Ireland!

Join participants from around the world to explore the global issues of today and how to critically and creatively report on them. 

Learn from CNN journalists, industry experts and media analysts about how technology is transforming the way we tell stories and the challenges of international reporting. 

These intensive two-week courses will expand your worldview and help you build relationships through peer networks and collaborative journalism. 

The Summer School is hosted by CNN Academy and UCD Clinton Institute and will take place at University College Dublin.

Choice of Modules

The Summer School consists of two modules and participants are welcome to choose either one or both of them. 

Module 1: The Future of Journalism 

This immersive two-week programme is workshop-based and designed for those eager to stay ahead with the latest skills and knowledge in journalism. CNN instructors will provide hands-on audio, video and digital production training in person and will also guide participants in practical exercises. The module includes: 

  • multiplatform content production 

  • social and mobile storytelling methods 

  • digital tools for investigative reporting 

  • verification techniques and open source information 

  • AI and the evolution of news media technologies 

 

Module 2: Journalism and International Affairs 

This two-week programme combines lectures, seminars and interactive group learning activities. It draws on current global issues and challenges and the responses to these by the international news industry. It provides participants with deep dives into the making of news headlines and the challenges of reporting on complex events and crises. It includes: 

  • reporting on international crises 

  • interaction of journalism with policy and politics 

  • the future of foreign correspondence 

  • roles of news media in the making and representation of international affairs 

  • news media and democracy

Who is the Summer School for?

Students and early-career journalists and media practitioners. 

Students should have completed at least one year of university. Students can be from any discipline but must have a strong interest in the field of journalism. Students can take the modules for credit if this is required by their home institution – see below. 

For those who have completed a first degree, the modules will provide advanced skilling suited to transitioning to a career in journalism or developing transferable skills in communication and storytelling.

Credit

Each of the Summer School modules carries 5 ECTS credits. 

UCD uses the ECTS European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), based on student workload. Your home institution decides on credits to be awarded for modules completed at UCD.

Note for US-based students: We recommend that 3 US credits be awarded for the successful completion of each module, so 6 US credits for the completion of both modules.

Fees

The fee for each two-week programme is 1,600 euros. The fee for both programmes is 3,200 euros. 

 Please note, the fee for tuition does not include accommodation.


Housing

Participants enrolling on this programme are eligible to apply for UCD's on-campus housing. If you would like to apply for on-campus accommodation, then please indicate this in your application form when prompted to do so. You will then receive information about how to apply and costs for on-campus accommodation via e-mail. Participants are welcome to not stay on campus but must note that finding accommodation off-campus will be solely their responsibility.
